Bronze statue of Dr Francisco Luis Gomes to be erected in Navelim

MARGAO: In honour of the esteemed Goan physician, writer, historian, economist, political scientist, and former MP in the Portuguese parliament, Dr Francisco Luis Gomes, a bronze statue of him will be erected in Navelim within the next one-and-a-half months, said former Rajya Sabha MP Luizinho Faleiro, who heads the Dr Francisco Luis Gomes Memorial Trust.  The foundation stone for the construction of a compound wall with a gate for the proposed amphitheatre hall in Dr Gomes’ name was laid in Navelim on the occasion of the 154th anniversary of his death, observed on September 30.

The foundation stone was laid by Francisco Sardinha, MP, South Goa, in the presence of Navelim MLA Ulhas Tuenkar, Rev Fr Gabriel Coutinho and local Sarpanch Lucia Carvalho, among others. During the event, Faleiro said that the land for the proposed amphitheater hall had already been handed over to the Collectorate office. Faleiro stressed that the project is intended for the benefit of the people of Goa, including the residents of Navelim. He also shared his efforts to secure funding for the project, even attempting to allocate funds under the MPLAD scheme when he was a Rajya Sabha member.
