PANJIM: Reiterating its demand for a floor test, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday said that the Goa ‘hijacking’ of power by BJP affected the party nationally.
Reacting to the exit polls in five States, Congress said attempts by Governor Mridula Sinha to save the government will bear no fruits.
“BJP’s act of usurping power in Goa in 2017 seems to have worked against it nationally,” State Congress president Girish Chodankar said. “We have time and again said that we have the numbers to form the government and would show it on the floor of the House,” he added, accusing the Parrikar government of taking voters for granted.
He also attacked Sinha for ‘allowing’ ailing Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to continue in office. “The unfruitful attempts by Governor Mridula Sinha to allow ailing CM Manohar Parrikar will fetch no gain for the BJP. On the contrary, the Goa fiasco has contributed to the loss of the BJP nationally,” Chodankar said when asked to comment on the exit polls.
Chodankar said the electoral outcome would serve as a ‘warning’ for the BJP which was ‘planning to dissolve the Legislative Assembly in Goa’. “Governance has come to a standstill and secretaries of the chief minister are ruling the State taking advantage of his sickness,” he alleged.
Parrikar has been absent from office for long due to failing health. The government has declined to specify his health status citing right to privacy.
Chodankar said Congress has launched ‘Jan Akrosh’ rallies in all 40 constituencies wherein the party is holding public meetings demanding restoration of ‘governance’ in the State.
Opposition leader Chandrakant (Babu) Kavalekar said the Congress Legislative Party has decided to start a door-to-door campaign called the Jan Sampark Abhiyan.
“We will bring to the knowledge of the people the misrule of the BJP at the State as well at the Centre. We will also take financial contribution from the people in whatever way possible so that they feel they have certain contribution to the party,” he said.
