MARGAO: Residents of Uzro-Raia woke up on Tuesday morning to hear the shocking news of a daring burglary in their neighbourhood last night.
Besides lifting away valuables, including gold ornaments, cash and whisky bottles, all worth around Rs 1.93 lakh, the burglars feasted on foreign liquor and ice-cream before lifting away Scotch whisky from the bungalow.
Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, who visited the house of the complainant Elizabeth Cardozo, later called for strengthening of police surveillance to keep burglars at bay.
The incident is believed to have occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the miscreants effected entry inside by breaking open the double iron grill of the window of the ground-floor bedroom. After ransacking the house, they managed to lay their hands on gold chain, decorative gift design items, two ladies watches, one HCL table, one Nokia phone, three bottles of imported liquor, 3,000 Dirhams and cash Rs 4,000 totally worth Rs 1.93 lakh.
The Curtorim MLA said the miscreants had feasted on foreign liquor and ice cream before lifting three bottles. “The modus operandi used by the miscreants and the one at Sonsodo is similar. They have only lifted cash and gold. I feel that the value of the stolen gold and other items may be much more than the estimate prepared by the police”, he said.
Replying to a question, Reginaldo underlined the need for strengthening of the surveillance system to ensure that the miscreants at kept at bay. “Shortage of manpower at the Maina-Curtorim police cannot be an excuse. The cops have to strengthen their surveillance”, the MLA added.
