At a press briefing on Thursday, association President Sudip Tamhankar said such a practice to restrict speed limit in a small state like Goa was not required. “We will submit to the Transport Department that speed governors will not serve any purpose in Goa. The association is not in favour of fitting the gadget on transport vehicles,” he said.
A couple of months ago the Centre had issued a notification to enforce the mandatory requirement under the Central Motor Vehicles (Sixth Amendment) Rules on passenger and transport vehicles except ambulances, police and fire vehicles.
Rules on speed governors state that transport vehicles be fitted with a speed governor that can be sealed and cannot be removed or tampered with without breaking the seal. The rules further mention that speed governors of transport vehicles be set so that it is incapable of being driven at a speed in excess of the maximum pre-set speed except down an incline.
