Bus stops notified, but blame game over traffic indiscipline continues

PANJIM: The Transport Department has notified bus stops on the Panjim-Dona Paula route and it will ensure that buses make only designated halts.

Though the bus stops were notified in the capital city and its surroundings in the past, the scourge of driving on this road has been the constant stoppage of local buses at will, which forces traffic to halt behind them causing traffic jams due to the narrow width of the roads.
Many times these buses block each other in a bid to get maximum passengers, causing havoc for other road user, be they two-wheeler riders or motorists.
Also the Miramar-Dona Paula road via Tonca and Caranzalem has potholes and narrows on some stretches which makes it even more difficult for traffic to flow smoothly.
The roads are lined by huge upmarket residences, where people sport posh cars, but the condition of the road outside is to say the least, bad.
The onus to enforce traffic discipline is on the traffic police and RTO officials, but there appears to be a blame game among them, adding to the woes of the commuters.
The buses literally crawl and stop at almost every 200 mts along the narrow roads of Caranzalem and Taleigao, forcing the traffic behind to stop every time this happens.
Bus owners say that the people want them to stop while the general public say that the authorities are not taking action as there are “other considerations” that make law enforcing authorities to keep their mouth shut.
In all, this traffic indiscipline, the commuter suffers, being pushed into buses to use the hackneyed usage “like sardines” and cars drivers and two-wheeler rider are forced to idle the engines, wasting precious fuel and cause pollution as the buses take their own time to move on.
RTO officials say that the bus stops have “been notified” and will come up. But the question is when and whether they will penalise the bus drivers, who constantly violate laws with impunity.
