CANACONA: A KTC bus broke down on a slope at Panna-Agonda due to engine trouble on Thursday. The bus, which had begun its return trip from the Agonda church, consisted mainly of students and teachers of St Anne Institute, Agonda.
According to sources, the bus driver was trying to negotiate a turn on the slope at around 2 pm when the bus abruptly stopped. Smoke began to billow from the driver’s cabin, eliciting screams from the students. To make matters worse, the bus, which had nearly reached the Agonda-Khola main road, began to slide backwards.
Miraculously, the driver managed to stop the vehicle on the slope, although it partially blocked the road leading to the Agonda church. The passengers then rushed out of the bus and began to walk home. Some of them were seen requesting passing motorists for a lift.
The bus, operates on the Agonda-Khola-Khanaguinim and Betul-Margao route. It was repaired only at around 5 pm.
