MARGAO: The South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) at its meeting held on Monday has decided to find the middle path to ensure the business of market vendors is not affected and at the same time the exhibitions cum sales continue.
The SGPDA also decided to seek legal help on the issue of exhibitions cum sales.
The issue of exhibitions cum sales has been doing rounds for quite some time and MLAs – Vijai Sardesai and Digambar Kamat and the chairman Mauvin Godinho have criticised the opposing group for being too stiff in their demands.
The Fatorda MLA said that they are willing to find a way, which is acceptable to the traders and at the same time ensure that the SGPDA also gets some revenue.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said, “We are the only people, who are taking this step of curtailing the sales and we call ourselves as trader-friendly, as these sales happen all over Goa all time.”
“If we are still called anti-traders then something is wrong,” he added.
Digambar Kamat said, “The promise of keeping all sales stopped till Chaturthi was followed. But the appeal made to the traders of making a list of products to be banned at the exhibition cum sales was not acceptable”.
When asked for his view as an MLA of Margao, he said, “We will have to find a middle path and strike a balance as revenue for SGPDA is also an issue.”
SGPDA chairman Mauvin Godinho said, “It is a fallacious argument but despite that we are taking a legal opinion and are also examining what best can be done by taking all on board.”
“I will discuss the issue with the market vendors. Stopping us from holding any activity on our land and the list of products they have submitted is unacceptable,” Mauvin said.
