PANJIM: Incessant rains accompanied by gusty winds created havoc across the State on Monday with the Fire and Emergency Services (FES) attending to 273 calls between 7 am and 7 pm.
Panjim received 7.82 cms of rainfall during the day between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm accompanied with strong winds causing damage to property, however, no lives were lost. Most parts of the low lying areas across the city were inundated with Dayanand Bandodkar Marg, the road connecting the Panjim KTC bus stand to Miramar beach remained inundated at most places.
The temporary boundary at the samadhi of the former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar too had been breached with the sheets blown away due to strong winds.
Director of FES Ashok Menon informed that the department received 273 calls during the day at the 14 fire stations and sub-stations of the department and Panjim alone received 40 calls which mostly included calls of trees being uprooted due to strong winds. “Amongst the 40, five were major however, no lives were lost. In one case, a tree fell on parked vehicles in Bhatlem area but no casualty was reported”, he added.
He informed that between July 1 and August 5, the Department received 1071 emergency calls and during the operations, saved 7 human lives and 43 animals. However, 7 humans and 7 animals died while the department was successful in saving property worth Rs 200 crore and property estimated at Rs 80 crore was damaged.
Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) workers were seen till late evening clearing the roads off branches and leaves.
