CANACONA: Irresponsible behaviour of the tourists who indulged in uncontrolled drinking has left the otherwise virgin Butterfly Beach buried in the trash generated during their New Year revelry on this beach.
The Butterfly Beach, which lies between Palolem and Agonda, till a few months ago was non-accessible to tourists except through waters. The construction of a road, although not tarred, during the pandemic period has opened floodgates to the tourists, who it seems, are out to destroy the ultimate paradise, looking at the trash left.
Till a few months ago this beach named Butterfly Beach (it looks like a butterfly with wings open) was not on the itinerary of the tourists but with the construction of an approach road, the domestic tourists are seen riding through the forest to reach this beach.
The pictures of the trash left behind by the irresponsible mainly domestic tourists after the New Year night have gone viral which is drawing attention and condemnation from the concerned locals in Canacona.
Jack Fernandes, president of NGO ‘Goenkar’ whose members are in the forefront to both clear garbage and educate locals about ill-effects of discarding garbage in the open, termed it as a total disgrace.
“Who has to teach these irresponsible kids, it’s the responsibility of each one who went to this last left paradise on Earth to take back their trash they created,” Fernandes lamented.
Vikas Bhagat, general secretary of Goenkar backed Fernandes’ views and lambasted the thoughtless behaviour of the hundreds of tourists who after enjoying left the beach in a mess.
“The Butterfly beach is a last silent virgin beach presumably left on this planet and what a pity that the unruly class who call themselves tourists have ruined the place by recklessly discarding tonnes of their garbage,” bemoaned Bhagat.
