MARGAO: Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat in a scathing attack on former deputy chief minister Vijai Sardessai has said that bypassing rules and regulations under the pretext of recognising an eminent Goan Dr Jack Sequeira “for political mileage” is actually an insult to the great Goan.
However, he assured that that if Congress comes to power a statue of Dr Jack Sequeira would be installed in the Assembly Complex.
Speaking at the programme organised by Dalgado Konkani Academy to distribute its awards, Digambar asserted that Goa will never forget Dr Jack Sequeira’s immense contribution to preserving the Goan identity and his tireless efforts during the historic Opinion Poll.
While stating that Goans will never oppose recognizing the contribution of any prominent Goan for a cause that helped Goa, he however said that proposals have to be approved through proper procedure without violating any laws.
“We shall ensure that Dr Jack Sequeira’s statue is installed in the Assembly complex if the Congress is voted to power in Goa,” said Digambar and complimented the Dalgado Konkani Akademy for recognizing the good work done by Goans and giving them awards.
DKA President Tomazinho Cardozo while appreciating Digambar reminded the gathering that it was Digambar who had made budgetary provision to provide grants to DKA when he was the chief minister of Goa.
He also appreciated the role played by Digambar in getting the main auditorium at Ravindra Bhavan Margao named as Pai Tiatrist Auditorium and urged him to provide for space to set up a library at Ravindra Bhavan besides also getting the Sahitya Akademi to recognize Konkani in Roman script.
DKA felicitated the following persons: Isidore Dantas with Dalgado Literary Award, R B S Komarpant with Dalgado award for service to Konkani, Kenneth Zuzarte with Dalgado Cultural award, Premanand Raikar with Dalgado Joel D’Souza Heritage award, Aurelio Viegas with Dalgado Fr Freddy J da Costa Journalist award, Succoro Rebello with Dalgado award for Youth and Tessie Breanda Menezes with Dalgado Berta Menezes Award.
