PANJIM: Taking a swipe at Congress for inciting religious violence, the State BJP unit on Monday said that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has corrected a historical wrong.
NRI commissioner and the former South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar said that no religious communities should feel threatened with the Act passed in the Parliament earlier this month.
“The CAA is just to give justice to the minorities like Hindu, Sikh and Buddhists etc of the three countries namely Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. There is no need for any community in the country to fear the CAA,” he said.
The BJP leader added that Congress, throughout the nation has been dividing people on religious lines.
“Since independence, the party has been dividing people for vote banks and even today, they are trying to say a particular community is being targeted when it is not true. The GPCC (Goa Pradesh Congress Commit-tee) also unnecessarily raked up the issue of Christians in Goa when there was no need for this at this time,” he said.
About the violence by police against students in Jamia University and JNU, he said the students must not get involved in the communal issues.
“They (the students) are there for education, discipline and training, they must not get involved in communal issues,” he said.
Asked about the police entering the campus and assaulting students, he said, “The police did not start the violence. It was only after the students got violent, that the police tried to control it. Who know who started the violence first?”
