Cabinet approves 10% reservation for EWSs

Will not disturb reservations for SC, ST, OBC

PANJIM: In a landmark decision, the State cabinet on Monday paved way for 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections of society.
After chairing the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the new reservation was just the vetting of the Central government decision to provide reservations to EWSs. “The present reservation for economically weaker section is without disturbing other reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs and the reservation would be for education and jobs,” he said.
He said amendments required would be brought in the forthcoming Assembly session. “For the first time our Muslim and Catholic brothers in the general category would get reservation,” he said.
He said that persons not covered under the existing schemes of reservation for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the socially and educationally backward classes and whose family has gross annual income below 8 lakhs are to be identified as EWSs for benefit of reservation are eligible for the scheme.
“The persons whose family owns or possesses assets shall be excluded from being identified as EWSs irrespective of family income,” he said.
Those who are ineligible for the scheme, he said, were people who have five acres of agriculture land and above; residential flat of 1000 sq ft and above; residential plot of 100 sq yards and above in notified municipalities; residential plot of 200 sq yards and above in other than notified municipalities.
The Government of India has decided to provide 10 per cent reservation for EWSs in civil posts and services and for admission in educational institutes. The order would be effective for vacancies notified after 1/2/2019, he added.
In another decision the cabinet decided to hand over 4,000 sq meters of land in Cacora which was with Education Department to the Sanjay School.
