PANJIM: The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the draft Bill for amending the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970 granting permission to hire up to 50 contract workers without registration or licence from the Labour Department.
The proposal was placed before the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant seeking increase in the limit from 20 to 50 workmen. With this increase, the establishments/contractors employing upto 50 workers need not register or seek a licence for hiring any contract labour.
The matter was earlier placed before the Law Department, which vetted the draft amendment bill.
The Ministry of Labour has already emphasised the need to bring in labour reforms, especially amendments to the Act. Several States have already brought relevant amendments to facilitate industrialisation.
In another decision, the Cabinet has also approved a draft bill for amending the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947; amendments to Goa Panchayat Raj Act, Goa Factories and Boilers Act and the Goa Motor Vehicle Act.
