A police complaint has been filed at the Porvorim police station against the contractor hired by Reliance Jio to lay their cables as the first cables were cut near the Mandovi bridge on April 25 and then on April 27 cables were cut at Calangute, affecting telephone lines and broadband services. Later on May 1, lines were cut opposite Sai Service and again near the Mandovi bridge on May 2 the main hub, where all the lines meet, was cut leading to a network collapse.
Sources say the Internet company has not been coordinating with BSNL and the work was being done by the contractor. The contractor was working late at night as police had stopped them from working during the day.
BSNL sources say that core banking was affected in North Goa including transaction of many banks and the electricity helpline of Porvorim too was down.
According to them the first priority Wednesday morning would be to restore the banking lines and then the Internet services in Mapusa.
The restoration of the rest of the services would be done by Wednesday evening. As BSNL does not have a GM in the state, no official spokesman could be contacted.
“I have been following this up for the past two days after there were a lot of complaints from Calangute,” Shawn Martins, newly elected ZP member from Calangute told Herald. “I had brought up the issue with BSNL. Apparently the Reliance people while laying their cable by mistake cut the BSNL lines near the new Mandovi bridge. Yesterday while repairing the Calangute and Candolim cable, the internet cables to Mapusa were also cut by mistake.”
Anselm Noronha, from Aldona who works on the Internet has been trying to find a solution to the problem in the village says, “I work on a website. It is quite a problem because I work on the Internet. It is a blow because I cannot use the Internet.”
According to him a lot of people have been complaining at the Aldona telephone exchange as the net is not working at all.
