PANJIM: The proposed 100 TPD integrated solid waste management facility at Cacora-Curchorem in South Goa district and expansion of the integrated solid waste management facility at Saligao will be completed and commissioned in December this year.
The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is also in process of setting up a 250 TPD integrated SWM facility at Bainguinim for which the tender process is ongoing.
According to information available, the work of setting up a 100 TPD integrated solid waste management facility is in progress at Cacora in South Goa and the same will be tentatively completed by December 2021.
The first integrated SWM facility was set up at Saligao thanks to Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo, who identified the land and was inaugurated by the then Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on May 30, 2016.
From the inception, the facility has scientifically treated around 2,21,700 metric tonnes of solid waste. The facility also generated around 1,05,83,500 units of electricity of which almost 40 per cent has been provided to the electrical grid of the Goa Electricity Department.
The upgradation work of the facility is ongoing and around 80 per cent of the civil work is completed. The expansion work is carried out at an amount of Rs 103.87 crore. The work commenced on August 29, 2020 and will be completed by December 2021.
After expansion, the facility will be able to handle waste to the tune of 250-300 metric tonnes per day from the existing 150 metric tonnes per day. The expansion of the facility will bring in better technology for treatment of solid waste, it was informed.
The facility at Saligao is set up, operated and expanded by M/s Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd with the Goa Waste Management Corporation as the managing associate and Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) is the project management consultant.
