Caitu rakes up Baga cliff issue

PANJIM: Even as the government assured that stringent action would be taken against illegal excavation at the Baga cliff that endangers the Xavier Retreat House situated on it, Goa Vikas Party MLA Caitano Silva raised the bogey of communal and religious problems in the State if government fails to nab the culprit involved in the illegality.

“This is a serious issue. Someone has tried to damage a retreat house, a religious institute. If government fails to act immediately, I fear this might lead to communal and religious tensions in the State in future,” Silva said while supporting the calling attention motion moved by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo.
Lobo, pointing to the illegal hill cutting to construct an illegal road through the private property of the Jesuits community, informed the House that a local panch member Cleophas Fernandes alias Kelfa has damaged the wall in a bid to create a six-metre-wide road and demanded his arrest.
“The person involved in this illegality has political patronage. Police have told me that they are scared to arrest the person. There are total 27 cases registered against the culprit,” Lobo said. He also informed the House that the retaining wall, which is under threat, was repaired last year.
