The Benaulim MLA along with South Goa District Collector Venancio Furtado inspected the controversial scrap yard at Vanelim-Colva on Saturday. The duo saw for themselves how the illegal activity is posing a nuisance and a health hazard for the immediate neighbourhood.
“I am totally opposed to the presence of scrap yards in residential localities. These scrap yards should be relocated to areas away from human habitation to save the people from health hazards,” Caitu told the media after inspecting the illegal scrap yard.
Replying to a question, Caitu said he would press for an amendment to the Goa Panchayati Raj Act for the relocation of scrap yards from the villages.
The district collector said he would call for a detailed report from the Colva Panchayat secretary to find out the measures taken to get the scrap yard removed. “I will find out whether the Panchayat has moved for removal of the activity because of public nuisance,” he said.
The local residents, who have been running from pillar to post, to get the scrap yard removed thanked the Benaulim MLA and District Collector for taking time to inspect the scrap yard. The residents now hope that the authorities will take the inspection to the logical conclusion.
