Calangute gram sabha decides to make village garbage-free

Among the other issues opposed by the gram sabha was the Jetty Policy 2022 and the filling up of agricultural fields in the village.

Mapusa: The Calangute village panchayat headed by Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira discussed the garbage management and sanitation issue during the gram sabha and resolved to make the coastal village 90 percent garbage free.

“The panchayat has created three zones consisting of three wards each and each zone would have separate managers with 22 workers, two garbage trucks and two mini trucks,” said Sequiera and added that the team would work on garbage management including door-to-door collection of waste.

“Earlier garbage was not collected from the internal areas as a result of which people dumped their waste on the main road. By October 1, the whole plan will be streamlined and pamphlets will be circulated with information of the manager and other details to the public for better coordination,” the Sarpanch said and added that waste collection will be done on a round-the-clock basis to keep the coastal village clean.

The gram sabha also decided to create awareness of garbage management in schools and rope in the services of teachers to educate students on the collection and segregation of waste during the morning Assembly session.

Among the other issues opposed by the gram sabha was the Jetty Policy 2022  and the filling up of agricultural fields in the village.
