CALANGUTE: Calangute locals have not taken the decision of the government to throw open Calangute-Saligao Solid Waste Management Plant for entire North Goa. The locals fear disaster and another Sonsodo in making at Calangute destroying Calangute. Local MLA Michael Lobo has, however, allayed their fears stating that the plant would be exclusively for North Goa coastal belt.
Former Calangute sarpanch Laxman Porob told Herald that, “I was taken aback by the utterances of our chief minister that the solid waste management plant is for the entire district of North Goa. We were however told that the Plant would be exclusively for the Calangute and Saligao but if it for entire North Goa then it will be a disaster for the Village of Calangute.”
“The plant should only be restricted to Calangute and Saligao constituencies. If the government decides to open the plant for entire North Goa no panchayat will take the initiative to set up their garbage treatment plants. Everyone will start dumping their garbage atop the Calangute/Saligao plateau and no one will take responsibility for any mess at the plant, etc,” he added.
Calangute Comunidade, the owner of the land on which the plant is comping up, said the land was given for setting up the plant keeping in mind the interests of only Calangute and not for the entire North Goa.
MLA Lobo said: “The Solid Waste Management Plant at Calangute-Saligao plateau will only cater to the coastal villages of Calangute surrounding areas. The government needs to explore and set up three similar plants to address the garbage woes of North and South Goa.”
