Calangute Panchayat comes in firing line, blamed for stalling development

Underground cabling launched at Tivai vaddo as high tension overhead cables had gone weak; calls for cooperation from locals to to develop the tourist village of Calangute

CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Saturday launched the underground cabling works at Tivai Vaddo, Calangute.
Addressing a gathering later he accused some members of the Calangute Panchayat of blocking developmental works in Calangute. “The works have been initiated through the efforts of late Adolf Silveira to prevent any electrical mishaps in the densely populated area. Late Adolf had brought it to my notice the danger to the lives of residents and difficulties they faced due to overhead low tension lines. The works would begin shortly at an estimated cost of Rs 5-6 lakh. I request the residents to cooperate with the electricity department for completion of works.”
Lobo indirectly accused some Calangute panchayat members of blocking developmental works in Calangute and urged them to back him regarding the works undertaken by him in public interest.
Others present at the function included Asst Engineer Chandran, Junior Engineer Panna D’Souza, and Calangute ZP member Abelina Menezes.
When contacted, Calangute Panch and de facto leader Joseph Sequeira strongly denied allegations that the Calangute panchayat had blocked developmental works initiated by Calangute MLA.
“On the contrary, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has halted many of our projects in Calangute. We have carried out underground cabling for the ward of Tivai Vaddo on the other side at estimated cost of Rs 51 lakh, but we did it without any inauguration, Sequeira said.
