Calangute police nab gang involved in cellphone thefts

CALANGUTE: Four persons involved in stealing high-end mobile phones and other electronic devices from tourists from the coastal belt were nabbed by Calangute police, on Saturday.

They have been identified as Mahesh Tupkar, resident of Arradi-Parra; Jahidul Mondal, local of Agarwaddo-Calangute; MyranViegas, from Taleigao and Raju Rathod, resident of Nagoa.

According to Calangute Police Station Police Inspector Dattaguru Sawant, Rohan Menezes, a tourist from Bengaluru, Karnataka, lodged a complaint stating that while he was at Baga Beach, some unknown person committed theft of his blue colour I-Phone 14 worth around Rs 80,000. 

Calangute police registered a case of theft under Section 379 IPC and formed a special team to trace the accused person. During surveillance of the stolen mobile phone, it was traced in the possession of accused Mahesh Tupkar, and Jahidul Mondal. Both of them have been involved in similar cases in the past, PI Sawant said. 

During questioning, the duo confessed their involvement in the theft and said that they have given the mobile phone to Myran Viegas and Raju Rathod, who are also involved in other cases of stolen mobiles. Seven more mobile phones, and two cameras all worth Rs 2.5 lakh were recovered from the accused, PI Sawant said. 

The police team consisted of Head Constables Vishal Gawas, Satish Sawant,  Vidhyanand Amonkar, Police Constables Amir Garad, Vijay Naik, Pravin Chodankar, Ganpat Tiloji , Gaurav Chodankar, Pritesh Kinlekar and Head Constable Manoj Shinde under the supervision of PI Sawant.
