CALANGUTE: Police in Calangute have raided an allegedly illegal slum housing at least 100 huts and 500 residents, which has become a hub for illegal vendors, beggars and other anti-social elements, according to police.
The fast-growing slum is located near the Babreshwar Temple at Khobrawaddo, Calangute. Calangute PI Dattaguru Sawant led a large team of police personnel in the raid, which took place on Friday evening.
Around 40 migrants, along with the owners of the rented rooms, were rounded up after it was found that they were living there without submitting the mandatory tenant verification form to the local police. The crackdown follows a drive conducted by the police earlier this week, wherein touts, illegal vendors, hawkers, beggars and other anti-social elements were rounded up and detained.
