MApusa: Calangute Police rescued four children from begging in Calangute on Wednesday.
Acting on a written complaint lodged by Calangute Sarpanch Francisco Rodrigues about the increasing menace of child begging in the panchayat jurisdiction, a Calangute police team comprising Police Inspector (PI) Nolasco Raposo, LPSI Sonam Verenkar and other police personnel conducted a raid, late evening on Wednesday and rescued the four children who were seen begging at the behest of three women. The police were assisted by Emidio Pinho, in-charge of Victim Assistance Unit, GMC, Bambolim.
PI Raposo informed that the rescued children are lodged at Apna Ghar, Merces. He further added that the three women, who were carrying the children and forcing them to beg from tourists, have been booked under Section 8(2) of the Goa Children Act and Section 76 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. The accused women were then produced before the JMFC, Mapusa and were remanded to five days police custody.
