MAPUSA: Minister for Waste Management Michael Lobo on Saturday stated that the water woes of Calangute and Saligao Constituencies will solved and will receive 24 hours water supply once the 15 MLD plant near Pilerne Industrial Estate commences.
Lobo said that the government is planning to set up 20 MLD water treatment plant on a government acquired land near waste treatment plant at Saligao.
A water pipeline from Tilari is commissioned to Calangute Police Station. This pipeline will be further taken to Calangute Plateau. The government has planned to set up 20 MLD treatment plant at Calangute Plateau, close to Pilerne IDC on a government acquired land. Out of the 20 MLD, 5 MLD raw water will be supplied to the IDC while 15 MLD will be treated and provided to the neighbouring villages.
“The estimated cost of the project is Rs 20 crore and a provision for the project is already made in the Budget. Around 1/4th amount of the total project will be deposited by the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) to Department of Water Resources since the IDC has asked for 5 MLD of raw water while remaining 15 MLD will be treated,” Lobo informed.
“If the file receive all clearance from Technical, Administrative and Finance departments and the tender is floated within one and half month and work starts on immediate basis then in one year’s time the project will be ready and people will get 24×7 water supply in Calangute as well as neighbouring villages of Saligao and water problem will be solved,” he said.
Waste Management Minister was speaking to the media persons during the launch of hot-mixing of road work from Calangute to Baga in presence of Zilla Panchayat member Dattaprasad Dabholkar and panchas of Calangute Village Panchayat.
Stating last 10 years Calangute Constituency and other neighbouring villages such as Saligao, Nerul are facing major issue of water shortage, Lobo said, “Calangute Constituency is receiving 9 MLA of water. However, with the rise in commercial activities, the actual requirement of water is 28 MLD. People don’t even receive water on alternate days. Out of the 15 MLD plant at Porvorim, 5 MLD plant will be functionalised by mid April.”
