Calangute villagers demand cracking down on spas, other illegal activities

CALANGUTE: The Gram Sabha members of Calangute, unanimously proposed to curb all the spas from operating and demanded swift action to halt their operations. The members also expressed frustration over the delays in obtaining information when filing RTIs, hindering their ability to lodge timely complaints.

The Calangute Gram Sabha was held on Sunday, and brought together locals to address pressing issues faced by the community, especially against touts and the illegal activities which are going on in the village. 

The gram sabha members to conduct a survey of all establishments especially with regard to them having trade licences, so that the Calangute Village Panchayat can get its due revenue, which can be utilised for the development of Calangute. They demanded that the panchayat should take proactive measures to curb these issues. 

Gram Sabha members pointed out that there were many illegal constructions and businesses which were operating without any licences. The panchayat is not getting any revenue from these establishments.  The locals are paying all the fees but we are not getting all the facilities. The panchayat teams should pay surprise visits to such establishments especially those that rent out flats for commercial purposes and do not pay any fees. The sarpanch informed the Gram Sabha that such a survey has been done a person has been employed for the purpose.

Gram Sabha members also blamed the panchayat secretary for not giving the RTI information in time. People should not be forced to go for appeals. The information should be provided in time, the stated.
