Calangute wants board showing daily wages

CALANGUTE: Villagers from Calangute including members of North Goa Tourist Taxi Owners Association (NGTTOA) have requested Calangute MLA Michael Lobo to display the wages for migrant labourers in Calangute village.

The NGTTOA members put forth the suggestion to Lobo during a recent drive against the migrants for crowding the Calagute market area.
Interacting with Lobo, NGTTOA members including President Vasudev Arlekar and Vice President Ravindra Vengurlekar said a display board indicating the wages of the migrants and daily labourers should be put up near the site where migrant labourers wait for daily jobs.
They further suggested that the display board can also be put up at important places so that people are aware of their wages and how much they should pay them, as people are forced to pay whatever the migrant labourers demands in the absence of any such display of wages.
Responding to their suggestion, Lobo said he will write to the Labour department asking to fix a minimum wage for daily wage labourers, especially the migrants.
“They should be given a reasonable wage, say Rs 350-400 for labour jobs and accordingly for the masons, etc. There should be ceiling on the wage of migrant labourers,” said Lobo.
