Calling Attention: Kamat demands immediate augmentation of Shirvodem Sewerage plant

Overflowing sewage infiltrates into nearby fields, causing nuisance to farmers

PORVORIM:  The
non-augmentation of the Shirvodem sewerage treatment plant is creating
unbearable stench and nuisance to farmers and causing infection to their feet.
This issue was raised by Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai
questioned the over-zealousless of the Goa State Pollution Control Board for
issuing notices to SGPDA market chicken for not using the sewerage network to
dispose chicken waste. Sardesai said there was no sewerage pipeline in the
SGPDA market and secondly chicken waste could not be disposed off in the
sewerage pipeline. CM assured to look into the matter.

Kamat called on chief minister Pramod Sawant to augment the
Shrivodem Sewerage treatment plant at the earliest. He said the sewage overflows
during the monsoons and goes into the nearby fields causing problems for the
farmers. He called on Sawant to appoint a nodal officer from the PWD to handle
this.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai was the pipeline was not
completed. He said the problem of sewage overflow was taking place in low lying
areas. Sardesai pointed out that the GPSCB officials were over-zealous in
issuing notices to SGPDA chicken vendors to connect to the sewage line or shutdown
their shops, but there is not connection of SGPDA to the sewerage line,
Sardesai pointed out.

Sardesai also alleged that the work was sub-standard and the
place was stinking.  This is a major
issue especially in Madel, he disclosed. Also he called for the chief minister’s
intervention in the notices that were issued to chicken vendors since chicken
waste cannot be discharged in sewerage lines.

Sawant said he would look into the matter.
