Cameras sought to spot traffic offenders

PANJIM: The Goa Police has proposed to install 662 CCTVs cameras across the state and 146 traffic signals in a bid to curb as well as detect traffic violations.

PANJIM: The Goa Police has proposed to install 662 CCTVs cameras across the state and 146 traffic signals in a bid to curb as well as detect traffic violations. The proposal comes in the wake of several traffic rules being violated right from not wearing of helmets, to tinted car windows, talking on mobiles and so forth. 
CCTVs will ensure traffic discipline as it will capture and record traffic violations, which will be monitored from the control rooms. Officials said that each traffic signal will also have CCTVs fitted around to check for any violation. 
The traffic cell has this year issued nearly 39,000 challans for not wearing helmets.  
The state witnessed an increase in fatal accidents this year along with the number of deaths registered as a result of these accidents. As per records of Goa Police, a total of 16 fatal accidents were registered from January 2015 till date that claimed 123 lives, while 90 accidents were reported during the corresponding period in 2014 claiming 93 deaths.
