MARGAO: Responding to concerns raised by local residents, the Camurlim gram sabha has resolved to ask landlords who lease out their premises to migrants, to pay one month’s rent to the panchayat.
The issue of migrants living in the villages has been a hot topic of discussion amongst various Salcete gram sabhas, and in Camurlim, the locals were upset over a recent incident where an elderly person was targeted by a youth who was staying in a rented room in the village.
At the gram sabha, the villagers further demanded that the panchayat create a database of migrants staying in the village in rented premises and carry out a verification exercise of the identity details of these migrants, such as their native place of residence. The villagers demanded that this information be shared with the police as well.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Sarpanch Basilio Fernandes said the villagers had raised this issue and wanted to know about the steps being taken to register the migrants with the panchayat, along with a count of the number of migrants presently in the village.
While the Sarpanch assured to collect the tenants’ details, he called on the landlords to furnish such information on their own, before the panchayat sends them a notice.
Amongst other issues discussed at the gram sabha were the temporary closure of the Curra road, with the residents complaining about the hardships they have been facing. The Sarpanch said he would seek legal opinion about how to resolve the matter, given that it is presently sub-judice.
On another note, resolutions were passed to increase the budget
for weed-cleaning work and the formation of various village-level committees. Panchayat secretary Nilesh Shirodkar also read out the minutes of the last gram sabha.
