The Canacona Flood Relief Committee (CFRC) has stepped in to insure 187 flood-prone houses in Canacona taluka to the tune of about Rs 6 crore.
Some of the house insurance policies were handed over to  beneficiaries in a function at the Shree Shradanand Vidyalaya Poinguinim on Thursday.
Those attending the function included insurance company officials and CFRC members, besides the insurance beneficiaries.
The insurance premium will be within the range of Rs 125-135 per annum, while each house will be insured for an average amount of Rs 3 lakh.
Most of the houses were either completely destroyed or partially damaged and had to be rebuilt, while some houses inundated in the unprecedented Canacona floods at Poinguinim, Loliem, Mangan, Mohard and Kindlem have also been insured.
The first annual premium on behalf of all these insurers has been paid by CFRC Chairman Sandeep Ramesh Painguinkar in his individual capacity, while individual insurers have to bear the premium from the second year.
Sandeep Painguinkar announced that the committee had built 16 houses destroyed in the October 2009 floods, besides providing assistance in the form of construction materials to build another 60 houses in Canacona taluka.
Sandeep Dessai, Development Officer with National Insurance Company, informed that calamities always strike without warning and said the company offers a decent insurance cover to all  properties which can be destroyed by natural calamities.
