Canacona farmers feel the heat as lack of rains pose threat to crops

CANACONA: Farmers in Canacona are worried that lack of rains and high humidity levels could damage their well-grown crops if the situation doesn’t improve soon.

After the late onset of Southwest monsoon in Goa during the last week of June, the seasonal rain intensified during July.

However, the there was hardly any rain in August and the trend seems to have continued in September so far.

“Chillies have been planted in many hilly regions of taluka along with seasonal vegetables. Such crops need a lot of water and current weather condition of extreme heat as well as humidity can destroy the crops,” said Gajanan Gaonkar from Cotigao. He added that farmers may face severe financial losses if the weather continues to remain the same.

“Ganesh Chaturthi is barely a week away. Cucumbers, gourd luffa and more such vegetables are integral part of curries made during the festival. The creepers will dry up if the weather continues like this,” said Punaji Gaonkar, a farmer from Aasali-Shreesthal.
