CANACONA: Acknowledged as one of the most-backward panchayats, Canacona has pinned its hopes on the six newly-elected sarpanchas to bring development and progress to the region.
Expectations are also high to implement various long-pending infrastructural facilities in the taluka. The Loliem-Polem sarpanch Ajay Lolienkar said his first priority would be to provide water to every home in the panchayat, besides providing good roads, electricity and garbage collection from all wards.
Poiguinim sarpanch Ramdas Puzari, who was elected unopposed, was keen to set up a police outpost, provide wash rooms at the Poiguinim market, install signboards, widen roads and desilt Galgibag river.
Cotigao sarpanch Umesh Gaonkar, whose wife is the outgoing sarpanch, said his priorities were to provide better water supply, widen roads, repair old bridges and culverts, implement forest rights act, garbage collection, organise health awareness programmes and provide a doctor at village health centre.
Shristhal sarpanch Devendra Naik, who boasts of rich experience, emphasised on water, roads, gutters, stray cattle menace, street lights and building a crematorium.
Agonda sarpanch Barsat Naikgaonkar, whose mother was sarpanch during the last term, stressed that solving water problems was high on his agenda and was also keen on replacing the existing 2″ PVC pipeline with a 4″ pipeline. Completion of the Bhandara at Mudkud, construction of additional water tank, beautification, lighting, changing rooms and washrooms at the beach and construction of a new bridge at Davalkhazan also featured in his list of priorities.
