Canacona police nab five suspected thieves

CANACONA: The Canacona police arrested five suspected thieves on Wednesday as they tried to break into a house at Sheli in Loliem village.

At around 3:30 am five people arrived in the village in an Alto car and a rickshaw and began shouting for help and banging on the roof as well as the rear door of the house of Clara Carvalho.

Frightened with the noise, the family members immediately called local panchayat member Sachin Naik and also the police who took the five into custody besides also seizing both the vehicles in which they arrived to the village.

Clara pointed out that as they have no road to their house, the access is usually blocked by pilling stones, which the people had removed last night. She said, “Given the fact that around six houses were broken into at Mashem and Dapat last week, we took no chances and called the police.”

The five who were nabbed by the police with assistance from the people narrated different versions.

While initially they said they were chasing a person who had stolen money from them, at the police station they changed to state that one of them was mentally weak.

Canacona PI Harish Raut Dessai while admitting to theft cases in the area in recent past, said they have seized all identity documents of the people nabbed yesterday. Police have not disclosed the names of the five arrested as investigations are still pending,

He also pointed out that though many are complaining of thefts, only one case is registered with the police.
