…But authorities fail to act
POINGUINIM, SEPT 15
The roads in Canacona taluka have in recent times become a dumping ground for waste, both degradable and non-biodegradable materials.
A huge quantity of thermocol and other plastic waste was dumped along NH-17 from Poinguinim to Polem. The highway side at Loliem, which is not thickly populated, is used by unscrupulous elements to throw waste like fish water from cold storage tankers, rotten bananas and other fruits and vegetables.
The interior roads in Canacona are being misused for dumping red bricks.
Besides, after trimming the bricks, the waste is left along the roadside, where pebbles are washed due to rains all along the road that makes riding of vehicles a risky business and many motorists have skidded on these slippery tarred roads.
It has become a risky affair travelling on a two-wheeler from the road leading to the potholed road from Sanjay Pinge’s general store shop to the residence of ex-minister Isidore Fernandes and onwards.
As per law the PWD, panchayat and other bodies that are entrusted with preventing encroachments on the roads have full right to lift away any material that is dumped along the roadside and penalize the offenders, but in Canacona till date the law-enforcing agencies have failed to act.
