CANACONA: The new vegetable market at Chaudi, Canacona, started operating from Friday morning said local municipal council Chairperson Prathana Naik Gaonkar.
She said 35 vendors have been allotted space and the new vendors have already begun shifting their shops and that the market would be fully operational from Saturday.
She also informed that around 40 roadsides vendors who pay sopo would also be accommodated in the new market complex, but only after the regular vendors were allotted space.
“Though there was strong opposition from the some councillors over the shifting of vendors to the new vegetable market, we went ahead to make it convenient for the vendors and the public in general,” said Vice Chairperson Samata Dhuri. The opposition councillors “were doing their best to oppose it, but despite their efforts, we did it,” she added.
Councillor Divakar Pagui said he would keep a check on the new market premises personally in terms of cleanliness and also see to it that plastic bags under 40 microns are banned in the premises.
There are around 37 registered vendors under the town vendors committee formed in 2014.
Referring to the garbage problem, Chairperson Gaonkar said, “it will be solved within three months, as 10 tricycles each would be provided to each of the 10 councillors from Monday.”
Besides, the municipality has also shifted the baling machine from Dumanem garbage plant to a building behind municipality office at Chaudi to compress the plastic garbage and dispose it on a priority basis.
