PANJIM: The Cyber Crime Branch of Goa Police has arrested a 20- year-old youth from Canacona for allegedly bullying and sharing unsolicited sexually explicit content with the victim on social media.
According to the police, the Cyber Crime Police Station had registered a case under Sections 67 and 67-A of the IT Act based on the complaint of a woman from Margao. The victim alleged that the accused, a user of Instagram account “akshu_jagtap_xx” sent her obscene material containing a sexually explicit act on the social media platform prior to April 4 this year, and used it to harass her.
The accused has identified as Vinay, 20, from Nanem, Gaodongrem, Canacona. He is a student at ITI and police said he has confessed to the crime.
The police said they have recovered chats between the accused and the victim, along with obscene videos from the youth’s phone, adding that the phone will be sent for a cyber forensics examination.
Further investigation is ongoing under the supervision of Dy SP Ashish Shirodkar, Cyber Crime Police Station, Ribandar.
The investigation revealed that the accused created an Instagram ID using fake name and developed friendship with the complainant and further transmitted lewd chats and videos on the social media platform to induce the complainant for sexual favours.
The police advised the public to be cautious of engaging with unknown people and fake accounts on social media.
They should verify the authenticity of any accounts on social media before engaging in video chats or any further communication, they warned.
