Cancelling sugarcane crushing big blow to farmers: Cong MLA

MARGAO: Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco in a letter to the chief minister has stated that the decision to cancel the crushing season this year at Sanjivani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana is a big blow to the dreams and aspirations of Goan farmers who cultivate around 900 hectares of sugarcane in the State.
Pointing out that it is for the first time since the factory had started operating in 1973 that the crushing season has been cancelled, which, besides causing dejection a among the local farmers, has also sent a message that there is a hidden agenda to completely close the sugar factory operations in Goa.
He further pointed out that the decision to cancel the crushing season this year is contrary to the assurance given by the chief minister and Co-operation Minister Govind Gaude on the floor of the House during the monsoon session.
Reginaldo pointed out that on August 2, Gaude had assured to start the sugar factory after Diwali and further assured that the factory would not be closed down.
He urged the chief minister to resurrect the sugar factory and instead of closing it, get it operational once again. He suggested that the factory can be revived if the mismanagement that was taking place is controlled.
