PANJIM: The State’s iron ore resources could have a new use with Dr Kattesh Katti, a professor of cancer research at the University of Missouri suggesting that an industry centered around the use of iron oxide nano particles in the detection and possibly the treatment of cancer could be started.
Speaking at the second Advocate Luis Caraciolo Memorial Lecture held on Wednesday, he said that this technology could open up new avenues.
“The iron ore sent to other countries may find use here in the State itself. It could create a new industry altogether,” said Dr Katti, adding that a collaboration from not only biologists but physicists and other professionals of science was necessary. He also told the audience of the implications of green nanotechnology and its use in detecting and treating cancer.
Also speaking at the event was James Scott, director at the University of Missouri on the trends of higher education in the US and a need for collaborating and sending students to different countries as part of their education.
“New countries give new situations for students to think about and exposes them to new cultures and ideas. There is a need for India to invest in higher education more and commit more to the sector than ever before,” Scott said. He also highlighted the importance and relevance of technology in the new educational scenario factoring it into the future plans of
higher education.
