Cane farmers threaten to launch stir for pending dues

PONDA: Goan farmers who are supplying sugarcane to Sanjeevani Sugar Factory held meeting on Thursday and warned of launching an agitation for their pending bills towards sugarcane supply as well as support price amount.
Because of pending dues, the farmers said they cannot undertake fresh cultivation of sugarcane.
The meeting was led by Farmers Association President Rajendra Desai in the presence of office bearers at Dharbandora. The farmers also decided to meet Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for the pending bills and support price amount.
According to the farmers, Sugar Factory had cleared bills of 359 farmers by paying them around Rs 3 crore for the latest season. However, around 480 farmers are still waiting for their payment of Rs 6.21 crore towards sugarcane supply.
Besides, these farmers are also waiting for support price worth Rs 3.36 crore which is also pending. There are around 1,000 farmers supplying sugarcane to Sanjeevani.
Meanwhile the Farmers Association has supported the agitation launched by the workers of Sanjeevani Sugar Factory demanding a vigilance inquiry into the scam while issuing tender for the sale of sugar produced in the factory.

hey alleged scam came to light when video/audio recording alleging bribes in the sale of sugar at low rates causing loss to factory became viral on social media.
