MARGAO: A programme they had watched on Discovery channel about a fortnight ago, literally brought a young couple out of the jaws of death as their Figo car plunged in River Sal near the Khareband bridge in the wee hours of Friday.
Alison Moreno and his fiancée were returning to Margao from Benaulim after watching a world cup match when their car skidded off the road and rammed against the barricade before plunging into the river. ‘For a moment, we could not see anything, but water all around. A fortnight ago, I had watched the Discovery channel wherein one was advised to break open the window glass to make one’s way out of the vehicle. The advice helped me as I broke the window glass. As water gushed inside, I managed to come out and later helped my fiancée to come out,” recalled Alison.
A group of persons, who heard their cries for help, rushed to them in the river and brought them to safety. “The car skidded off the road when I tried to avoid hitting a motorcycle which was coming in the opposite direction. The vehicle rammed against the barricade and plunged into the river,” he said.
The car was lifted out of the river by a crane, even as locals have called upon the traffic police to streamline the traffic in the area.
