MARGO: A joint inspection of a carbon emitting factory was conducted by the officials of Goa Pollution Control Board, rights activists, panchayat members and villagers, at Sao Jose de Areal, on Tuesday.
The joint team also inspected a church and residential houses located in the vicinity of the factory to ascertain the impact the carbon pollution has on the these structures.
The inspection was conducted following complaints by the Schedule Tribe Association of Sao Jose de Areal that a factory in the village was emitting carbon pollution and the same was affecting environment and the health of the villagers. The issue of carbon pollution was also discussed during three gram sabhas.
After the inspection, the villagers have decided to request the management of the factory to use modern technique to control pollution.
Parish Priest Fr Richard Pinheiro said that though the church is swept many times a day, it soon becomes dirty due to carbon pollution.
He said the most affected are the students who face risk health problems due to the carbon pollution.
“We are not here to stop the factory, but we need to stop the carbon pollution. The church and the government school is just opposite the factory,” he added.
The inspection team found carbon materials on vehicles, roads, food stuff, clothes, floors, walls and everywhere.
The inspection team held a meeting with the factory officials on controlling carbon pollution.
