VALPOI: Cardinal Mar George Alencherry on Saturday exhorted the faithful to be simple, sincere and to grow in sacrifice, in order to shun selfishness.
Cardinal Allencherry, who is the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly and head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, was delivering his homily during the mass at the Bom Jesus Basilica at Old Goa, as part of his first apostolic visit to Goa.
Emphasising the importance of penance, fast and sacrifice, Cardinal Allencherry said, “Penance, fast and sacrifice will help purify ourselves. The Lenten season is the time to contemplate on our past life and to renew our lives to improve ourselves spiritually.”
“We should give Christ to others through our words and deeds,” advised Cardinal Allencherry.
A large number of members affiliated to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church from different parts of the State participated in the Mass at Old Goa.
The Chancellor of the Syro-Malabar Church Fr Anthony Kollanur also accompanied Cardinal Allencherry on his two-day visit to Goa.
Earlier in the day, a meeting of the Central Committee members was convened at the Archbishop’s House at Altinho.
On Sunday, Cardinal Alencherry will preside over the mass to mark the feast of St Alphonsa and St Sebastian at 10.15 am at Pilar Mission Seminary, followed by the procession and fellowship meals and a family get-together along with Archbishop Ferrao.
