MARGAO: Heated discussions were held at the Carmona gram sabha over the Raheja’s project with the villagers demanding that the panchayat at least inspect the site as work had started even though the panchayat said they have asked the promoters to keep their project on hold.
It may be recalled that at the first monthly meeting held on June 27, the panchayat had resolved to hold a joint inspection of the site with the Town & Country Planning officials and ask the builder to keep the work on hold, till then.
At the gram sabha meeting on Sunday, the villagers demanded to know how the work had commenced on the site even though the panchayat had sent a letter asking the builder to keep the project on hold till the joint inspection was held and some even suggested changing the lawyer if necessary.
Sarpanch Winston Dias refused to comment on the matter stating that it was sub-judice and this angered the villagers more who demanded to know why an inspection could not be held even if the matter was sub-judice.
The secretary who had just been deputed for the meeting was unaware of the case details and hence unable to answer the villagers’ questions and this was also not appreciated by the people.
The discussion continued after the meeting where one villager abused the sarpanch with filthy words that angered a former lady sarpanch so much that she pushed the villager away.
The gram sabha earlier resolved to set up a health centre with an ambulance on the 5000 square metres of land in its possession.
Besides, the villagers sought to know the status of construction of football ground with the Rs 1.5 crore promised by the government to panchayats under the Din Dayal scheme.
