MARGAO: Locals from Carmona are aghast that a sand dune is being cut and damaged only to set up a beach shack at Zalor beach in the village and propose to complain about it to the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority.
Apparently the Tourism Department has given licence to Anthony Pinto of the famous Pinto caterers to set up a shack at Zalor beach. In fact, the tourism department has even marked areas where the shack is to be set up.
However, Anthony has set up a structure on the sand dune which he says was existing even last year and which he proposes to use as a kitchen while setting up the actual shack on the beach area by raising it up.
“Only my shack will be on the beach and subject to the rising sea levels as last year it was washed away,” he said while lamenting that others will be putting up their shacks away from the beach where the sand dunes have been totally washed away.
However, Vithal Luis and Manuel Luis from Carmona argued that the beach has not fully rejuvenated from the erosion that occurs every year during the monsoons and said more sand will be covering the beach in coming days.
While questioning the tourism department’s logic to permit a shack on a sand dune, they said they will complain about it to the Goa Coastal Regulation Zone Authority.
