MARGAO: Less than 10 days to go for the Carnival festivities in the Commercial capital, but the Margao Carnival Committee has no idea over the funds the panel will receive to host the ensuing festival.
President of the Margao Carnival Celebration Committee and former MMC chairperson Arthur D’Silva had sought funds to the tune of Rs 50 lakh from the Tourism department towards the festivities. Leave alone the funds, Arthur is sore that the Tourism Department is yet to announce the government grant for the civic body to organised the festival.
Last year, the government had sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for the Margao Civic body to organise the Carnival festivities, but Arthur says that the funds were hardly sufficient to organise the float and other bare minimum events. “We are handicapped in organising the carnival festivities in a big way for want of funds. I have asked the government to sanction Rs 50 lakh to put a good show this year”, he said, while keeping his fingers crossed over the government response.
Sources in the know said the run up to the carnival festival is a time when advance money is paid to the khel tiatr directors and book them for the shows in each of the 20 municipal wards.
