Carolina to be elected as Panjim Mayor
HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, MARCH 19
Carolina Po will be unanimously elected as mayor of Panjim tomorrow (Friday) as hers was the only nomination for the top post on the last day of filing of nomination on Thursday.
Similarly, Deputy Mayor Yatin Parekh will be re-elected unopposed as his was also the only nomination for the post.
Election is slated for Friday. With Panjim MLA Manohar Parrikar-backed opposition group failing to field a candidate, there was celebration in the ruling panel. Tongues were wagging as the BJP-supported opposition group allowed the nominees of Taleigao MLA Babush Monserrate to have their way.
As reported first by the Herald, Mayor Tony Rodrigues was asked to make way for Po by Monserrate as he wanted a change.
As per the CCP Act, mayor and deputy mayor are to be (re-)elected every year. The ruling group can if required replace the mayor or deputy mayor at the end of every year or continue with the incumbent.
