PANJIM: Against the backdrop of shooting at Calangute, the North District Magistrate has issued fresh orders prohibiting carrying of arms and fire arms.
The order by District Magistrate Ajit Roy directs licenced fire arm holders to deposit their weapons with the nearest police station on or before January 5, 2022. The order mentions that all types of arms, fire arms, ammunition, lethal weapons at any public place are prohibited till further orders.
For those facing threat, the DM stated they should approach Director General of Police for providing necessary security by the police but under no circumstances the person will be allowed to carry personal firearm/s unless permission from the undersigned.
However, public servants, defence personnel, police and security personnel on duty/sports persons who are members of the National Rifle Association are exempted from the restriction provided they don’t indulge in criminal offence.
The order comes at a time when the coastal belt of Calangute reported a firing incident. Goa has in fact reported quite a few shooting cases in the recent past of which some were fatal.
The State is also heading towards elections as election Code of Conduct is shortly to be imposed followed by voting mostly in February.
