Case against passport officer for storing excess liquor at Nuvem residence

PANJIM: The Excise Department has registered an offence against Passport Officer Agnelo Fernandes for storing large quantity of foreign liquor at his residence.

CBI SP Ashok Kumar said that the liquor bottles found during Wednesday’s raid at Fernandes’ residence at Nuvem have been handed over to Excise Department.
Excise Commissioner, Menino D’Souza confirmed that an offence has been registered against Fernandes under the Goa State Excise Act for storing liquor beyond permissible limit at the residence.
Fernandes was booked by CBI on Wednesday for issuing a passport to an applicant who has a Portuguese passport and criminal background. His house and office were raided by CBI on Wednesday and large amounts of foreign as well as Indian currency were seized. CBI said the raids will continue but refused to divulge any further details.
Sources said that of three passport holders whose houses were raided on Wednesday, one is a past history sheeter from Vasco and another is from Mapusa.
Jose Fernandes alias Deevod resident of Vasco is one of the passport holder but Vasco CID gave him the clearance for a passport and he also produced acquittal documents from the court to the passport office.
Another person, Denzil Crasto of Mapusa, who was dismissed from the police department was issued passport but three days later was booked in an extortion case and police wrote to the passport office to revoke the passport, which was done.
In both cases, the Passport Officer’s role is under scrutiny, the details of the third case are not known.
