PANJIM: Goa’s COVID-19 positivity rate witnessed a sharp rise on Thursday with a surge in new cases. In the last 24 hours, 1582 new patients were detected with the virus at a positivity rate of 34.53 per cent.
After a drastic rise in the daily positivity rate, which had crossed the 50 per cent mark in the initial days of May, it has now been fluctuating between 31 and 36 per cent with a drop in new cases.
On Wednesday, the positivity rate which was at 31.21 per cent with 1209 cases, rose to 34.53 per cent on Thursday. In the last 24 hours, almost 300 more cases were reported over the previous day. On Tuesday, the positivity rate was at 34 per cent while on Monday it was at 36 per cent.
As per the health bulletin issued by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), of the 4581 samples tested, 1582 were detected with COVID. With these new patients, the total Coronavirus caseload has reached 1,41,567.
Recoveries continued to be on the higher side with 3694 patients being discharged. As such, the active case tally further dropped and stood at 20,808. As on date, 83.70 per cent of the patients have recovered, that is 1,18,487.
On Thursday, 44 patients succumbed to the infection taking the death toll to 2272. As per the information, 22 deaths were reported at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) while 12 died in South Goa District Hospital (SGDH). Two deaths were reported in ESI hospital Margao while one each at Sub district hospital Ponda, Chicalim and primary health center Curtorim. There were also three deaths reported in private hospitals of South Goa and two in North.
Health authorities said that of the 44 who died, three patients had received their first dose of vaccines while one had been administered both doses. These patients, however, were suffering from co-morbidites.
