Cashew Business Suffers from Climate Effects and Other Challenges

The Cashew farmers have lamented that the cashew business is facing a downturn due to multiple factors ranging from climate impacts to administrative hurdles. The once-thriving industry is now grappling with issues such as forest fires, climate variability affecting cashew yields, and challenges in labor payments. Local Fenny and Hurrak producers are feeling the pinch of these adversities. The demand for their products remains high, yet the profitability is dwindling due to a combination of factors. They have demanded better prices for cashew beverages and good subsidies to continue the traditional method of making Fenni and Hurrak.

Rusai Fernandes has demanded better prices for cashew beverages and good subsidies to continue the traditional method of making Fenni and Hurrak. He further indicated towards the peril in continuing this traditional business of making Fenni and Hurrak, due to low market price. Rusia also raised concern over the decreased yield of Cashew production due to the unpredictable atmosphere this season. 

Clita Fernandes said that this business has been running for many years and due to all the factors including climate changes and low profit, people have stopped doing this business. if we want to preserve our tradition and continue this to the next generation then, the government has to provide us with a helping hand. 

Feni and Hurrak is one of Goa’s most famous and cheapest cashew beverages. The cashew apple Feni is prepared through fermentation and distillation process. Matured and ripened cashew apples are collected, juice extracted, fermented, and subjected to the distillation process.
